Coaching and Physician Continuing Professional Development

Professional coaching qualifies for physician continuing education professional development credits for members of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and members of the College of Family Physicians of Canada. 

Fellows of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (Maintenance of Certification) are required to submit:

  • 250 credits / 5-year cycle
  • Minimum of 25 credits per year and
  • Minimum of 25 Section 3 credits at the end of the five-year cycle; including one Feedback Received activity focusing on meaningful learning and continuous practice improvement.

As a recipient OF coaching: 3 credits per hour (Section 3 credits)

  • Coaching activities include setting goals with the coach/peer, being observed when needed, engaging in organic/structured coaching conversations (listening, asking questions, seeking feedback, reflecting and planning actions).
  • What is coaching or mentoring? An opportunity to improve specific areas of professional practice and personal well-being through guided interactions with a peer or certified coach and, where needed, planned actions.
  • What is not coaching? Hallway conversations with no goal setting are not coaching.

As a provider of Coaching: 3 credits per hour to a maximum of 15 credits per year (Section 3 credits)

  • An opportunity for peer or certified coaches to give feedback, reflect and improve their skills as needed.
  • What is coaching or mentoring (as a provider)? To deliver peer coaching and mentorship or executive coaching, if certified, in an organic or structured manner.  This activity may involve asking for feedback (oral or written) on coaching or mentorship skills and reflecting or changing as needed for further interactions.
  • What is not coaching? Hallway conversations without goals or intentions are not coaching.

Members of the College of Family Physicians of Canada (Mainpro+) are required to submit:

  • 250 credits / 5-year cycle
  • Minimum of 25 credits per year (certified or non-certified) and
  • At least 125 credits must be Certified and/or Certified Assessment credits, of which at least 10 must be Certified Assessment credits

To claim Mainpro+ credit for coaching:

As a recipient OF coaching: 

  • The coachee can claim credits for time spent receiving the coaching under NON-CERTIFIED learning activities OR
  • The coachee can complete a Linking Learning to Assessment activity for certified assessment credits

As a provider of Coaching:

  • The coach can claim credit for the time spent providing coaching under NON-CERTIFIED learning activities OR
  • The coach can complete a Linking Learning to Teaching or Linking Learning to Assessment for certified assessment credits
